Wildcats Show Grit in Hard-Fought Defensive Battle
A resilient team effort on the defensive end provides a strong foundation for growth as the Lady Wildcats continue their season.
Despite the result, there were bright spots in the Wildcats' latest outing. Adelaide Bedford led the offense with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including a perfect 1-for-1 from deep, while adding 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and a block. The defense was incredibly active, recording 8 team steals and providing a formidable wall at the rim with 4 team blocks. The group shared the ball effectively to record 4 assists and played with high discipline, keeping fouls in check with just 6 for the game.
The offense struggled to keep pace in the 21-34 result. Finishing inside was a major hurdle, with the team shooting 7 of 22 from two-point range and 32 percent overall from the field. Trips to the charity stripe unfortunately did not translate into points, with only 3 of 8 free throws falling. In a close contest, those empty possessions added up over the course of four quarters.
Ball security also proved costly for the young squad. The group committed 17 turnovers, which limited their total shot volume and undercut stretches of otherwise solid defensive play. While the battle on the glass was essentially a stalemate at 16 boards apiece—including 4 on the offensive end for the Wildcats—the extra chances were difficult to capitalize on given the shooting challenges on the night.
Individually, Bedford’s efficiency was a major highlight with a stellar 73 percent true shooting night. Ashia Sims added 6 points and 3 rebounds, showcasing great effort despite a tough shooting night. Makynzie Walker chipped in with 2 points, 3 rebounds, and an assist, while Nyah Sykes contributed across the board with 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks defensively. Faith Schurman provided 2 points and a steal, and Bailey Williams worked hard to collect a key rebound.
The defensive activity and these individual flashes are a fantastic foundation to build from. For this group of athletes, the roadmap to improvement is clear: cleaning up turnovers, finishing more efficiently in the paint, and converting at the free-throw line will quickly translate into a stronger offensive output. The effort is there, and with continued development, the results will surely follow.
